Junior Theatre Festival
2021 Junior Theatre Festival Information Sheet
What is JTF?
Junior Theatre Festival is a “rousing celebration of theater” where thousands of kids ages 8-18 get to come together for a mix of adjudications (performance with feedback), workshops, and unique performances by Broadway’s best. In addition, there are awards, dance parties, and activities.
When is JTF?
Junior Theatre Festival is a 3-day festival in Atlanta, Georgia. The dates are January 15-18, 2021.
How much does JTF cost?
We are giving a definitive final cost of $775. This price is higher than last year. Last year was an estimate, but this year we were able to use actual numbers from our trip. The cost should not go up in any upcoming years. This will cover festival registration and fees, 7 meals, flight, hotel, and Atlanta transportation. There will be a $100 deposit due upon registration. There will then be monthly payments of $100 due on the 6th of each month starting in April and ending in September, with a final payment of $75 due on October 6, 2020.
When are auditions?
Auditions will be held Monday, August 10, 2020, from 10am-1pm at Granbury Opera House (133 E Pearl St.). Everyone aged 11 years and older is automatically cast and is just auditioning for placement. Students 8-10 years old will need to be interviewed before auditions. (See following section for details). Registration for both chaperones and students are due by 10am on August 10. Signing up significantly early is recommended. Auditions are also going to be where we make decisions on Student Choreographer, Student Director, and Choreography DVDs. Student Directors and Choreographers may also be subject to a short interview.
Everyone aged 11 years and older is automatically cast and is just auditioning for placement. Students 8-10 years old will need to be interviewed prior to auditions to assess their maturity. It is to the discretion of the JTF Production Team on whether the student is cast or not. This is to ensure the student is mature enough to keep up in rehearsals as well as the festival itself and not be too overwhelmed. The interviews will be 3:30-5pm on the following dates: Wednesday, March 4, 2020; Wednesday, May 20, 2020; and Wednesday, July 29, 2020. In addition to the interview, it will be required that a parent or guardian attends the festival with the student aged 8-10. They must be 11 years old by auditions (Monday, August 10, 2020) to be exempt from this new audition rule.
- Student Director: will have the opportunity to work very closely with the director, and potentially block a scene.
- Student Choreographer: will have the opportunity to choreograph a section of the performance. The section will be chosen by the head choreographer.
- Choreography DVDs: we get to choose 6 students to attend auditions to be in the iTheatrics Choreography DVDs provided for all companies that license Broadway Junior shows. They hold an initial audition and then two sets of callbacks at the festival.
- Technical Theatre Track: students are able to attend technical theatre masterclasses in place of the acting, dancing, and singing masterclasses.
When are rehearsals?
We only have 12 rehearsals to put this show together. Because ensemble and teamwork are a major key focus of JTF, if a student misses more than 2 of these scheduled rehearsals, they will unfortunately not be able to perform. They may still attend the festival with us, but they will not be able to perform. This type of performance is different than most of our other Academy activities, and therefore requires a more strict attendance policy. If a student does miss any rehearsals, they do need to get with the production team to go over what they missed before the next rehearsal date. The final four January 2021 rehearsals are mandatory. All evening rehearsals will be 7-10 pm, morning rehearsals on Saturdays (January) will be from 10am-1pm. Here are rehearsal dates:
